Bollywood has given us some amazing father figures. Today on fathers day we try and pay homage to the characters who have tried to break stereotypes. Like a feminist father who instead of neglecting and ignoring his daughter encourages her to reach for the stars. These fathers are not dominant, aggressive and one tone, they are layered humans who have their flaws and qualities. Here is a list of 5 dads who broke the stereotype and stole our hearts.

1. Pankaj Tripathi’s Anup Saxena in ‘Gunjan Saxena’

Pankaj Tripathi is a great actor, he brings finesse and weight to every character he plays. Same with playing Anup Saxena the father of Gunjan who wasn’t just any other pilot but the first woman to fly fighter jets. Her achievements paved a path for many young girls in a field where they were initially denied entry. Gunjan’s success became inspirational to many and helped them pursue an unconventional careers.

Anup Saxena gives wings to his daughter’s ambition, he is the one constantly supporting her through tough times. The whole world is against Gunjan flying a fighter jet but Anup is standing beside his daughter holding her hand. When Gunjan’s brother tells her that ‘Larkiya plane Nahi urati Anup snaps at him asking, ‘Kaun sikha rha hai tumko yeh sab’ his words go straight into our hearts. Anup Saxena protects his daughter, he loves her and so he lets her fly freely.

2. Amitabh Bachchan’s Bhaskor Banerjee in ‘Piku’

Piku had three stars who stripped down their stardom and gave themselves to the story. Deepika Padukone is the least Deepika and Mr.  Bachchan is an old man completely dependent on his daughter but refuses to be taken lightly or kept in a corner to be forgotten forever. In fact, he and his story is the movie, everything revolves around him including his beautiful single daughter Piku who herself is aging.

Amitabh Bachchan’s character is dead set against his daughter marrying a guy who does not respect her or deserve her. In his eyes, his daughter deserves a man who lets her be who she is and accepts her the way she is. His unapologetic statements crack up audiences almost instantly. He is one of the funniest feminist fathers there is. Amitabh Bachchan is a delight to watch, he is quirky and his age makes him care even less about what other people think. Unlike a very mainstream father who wants to marry off his daughter as soon as he can Bhaskar is in no hurry. The Bengali background is authentic and helps in holding up the story because it is mostly in Bengal that such a liberal mindset exists.

3. Kumud Mishra’s Sachin Sandhu in ‘Thappad’

Kumud Mishra is one of the sweetest actors out there, when he talks it feels like jalebis. Kumud Mishra has been a father to many on-screen actors, here is he the father of Amrita. When Amrita decides to divorce her husband all elderly women try and convince her the accept and adjust instead of creating a scene. Sachin holds his daughter tight and respects her, he does not ask her to go back to her husband. He also reprimands his son when he misbehaves with his girlfriend. He also finds out that he hasn’t been supportive of his wife, realizing that so much more needs to be done to undo the damage of patriarchy. Kumud Mishra, sir, we love you.
