Aadhaar Card Rules Revamped: No More ‘Care Of’ Field and New Name Change Guidelines Explained

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a series of significant updates to the Aadhaar card system, and these changes are now making waves across the country. From the removal of the ‘Care of’ field to stricter documentation requirements for name changes, millions of Aadhaar holders need to stay informed about what these reforms mean for them.

One of the most notable updates is the elimination of the ‘Care of’ (C/O) field from Aadhaar records. Previously, individuals — especially those living at someone else’s address — could mention the name of the homeowner or guardian under the ‘Care of’ section. Under the new Head of Family (HoF) rules, this field is being phased out, and residents will need to update their address details accordingly to reflect their actual living situation.

Along with this change, UIDAI has also tightened the process for updating or correcting names on Aadhaar cards. Residents who wish to change how their name appears on the card must now submit proper supporting documents. Acceptable documents typically include government-issued identification such as a passport, PAN card, or school certificates that clearly reflect the correct name. Simply requesting a change without valid proof will no longer be accepted.

Authorities are also emphasizing that names on Aadhaar should be recorded in a standardized format to avoid discrepancies across different official documents. Inconsistencies in name spellings between Aadhaar and other IDs have long caused problems for citizens during verification processes, and these new guidelines aim to bring greater uniformity.

Citizens are advised to visit the official UIDAI website or the nearest Aadhaar enrollment center to understand the full list of accepted documents and follow the correct procedure. Updating your Aadhaar details now can save you from complications later when using it for banking, government schemes, or other essential services.

Staying updated with the latest UIDAI guidelines ensures your Aadhaar remains valid and hassle-free for all official purposes.
