Apple Pay has officially launched in India, marking a significant milestone for the country’s rapidly growing digital payments landscape. The tech giant’s popular contactless payment service is now available to Indian users, bringing a seamless and secure way to make transactions using Apple devices.
In its initial rollout, Apple Pay in India is supported through Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards. This partnership with one of India’s leading private sector banks signals a carefully planned entry into the highly competitive Indian fintech market.
One of the most noteworthy features of Apple Pay’s India debut is its ability to let users complete card payments without needing to enter a PIN or go through the OTP verification process. This frictionless experience is expected to appeal strongly to Indian consumers who are already accustomed to fast, app-based payment systems like UPI but are looking for smoother card-based alternatives.
Apple Pay uses near-field communication, or NFC, technology to enable contactless payments at compatible point-of-sale terminals. Transactions are secured through Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode, ensuring that personal card details are never directly shared with merchants. Apple stores a unique device account number rather than the actual card information, adding an extra layer of privacy and protection.
The arrival of Apple Pay in India comes at a time when contactless payments are gaining ground across retail outlets, restaurants, and shopping centers, especially in urban areas. With millions of iPhone users already present in the country, the service has a substantial potential user base ready to adopt it.
For eligible Axis Bank cardholders, setting up Apple Pay is straightforward through the Wallet app on iPhone. As Apple expands partnerships with more banks and card networks, the service is expected to become available to a wider audience in the coming months, further reshaping how Indians pay on the go.
