Engagement Gifts Turned Into a Scam: Kerala Groom Files Case After Bride’s Family Vanishes With iPhone and Over 7 Lakh Rupees

In a shocking case of matrimonial fraud emerging from Kerala, a young man has filed a police complaint against a bride and her family after they allegedly backed out of a confirmed marriage engagement — taking with them an iPhone and more than seven lakh rupees in cash.

According to reports, the couple had formally exchanged rings in a traditional engagement ceremony, signaling their intent to marry. Following the betrothal, the groom and his family reportedly handed over expensive gifts, including a brand-new iPhone and a substantial sum of money, as part of pre-wedding customs and goodwill gestures. However, shortly after receiving these valuables, the bride and her relatives allegedly severed all ties and withdrew from the relationship without explanation or return of the gifts.

Feeling cheated and financially devastated, the young man approached law enforcement authorities. A case has now been registered against the bride and her family members in connection with the alleged fraud.

In a separate and equally disturbing incident, a young woman from Thailand has traveled all the way to India searching for a man she met through social media and later married in Thailand. The woman claims the man lured her into marriage, extracted money from her, and then vanished. She is now cooperating with Indian authorities to trace his whereabouts.

These two cases, surfacing almost simultaneously, have cast a harsh spotlight on the growing menace of matrimonial fraud in the digital age. Experts and law enforcement officials have repeatedly warned citizens to exercise caution when conducting financial transactions during the pre-wedding period, especially with individuals or families they have not known for long.

Authorities are urging potential victims to report suspicious behavior immediately and to avoid transferring large sums of money or handing over expensive gifts before a marriage is legally solemnized. Both cases remain under active investigation.
