PlayStation appears to be exploring a new way for players to make payments using their DualSense controllers, according to a recently published patent. The patent describes a system where a user’s phone could wirelessly connect to the controller, allowing payments to be processed through apps already installed on the device.
The patent was reported by Patentalyze and later covered by Wccftech. It was originally filed in March 2025 but was only published on September 17, 2026. According to the filing, the controller would be able to detect payment information stored on a user’s personal device using NFC, Bluetooth, or even direct physical contact between the controller and the phone.
The patent text explains the process in technical terms, stating that after a notification is received, a message containing the payment method information linked to the video game player is sent from the electronic device to the controller. A second message with that same payment information is then transmitted from the controller to the video game console. In simpler terms, the controller would send a prompt to the user’s phone, where the payment could be approved.
If implemented, this approach could reduce the need to store sensitive payment information directly on the console. This could lower the risk of banking details or digital payment credentials being exposed in the event of a data breach affecting PlayStation, or if a user’s account is compromised.
Possible Wallet Credit Rewards Program
Separately, according to PlayStation Lifestyle, some users believe PlayStation may be preparing to launch a new rewards system called “Wallet Credits.” A listing for an app with this name reportedly appeared on the PlayStation Store months ago in several regions, without a publisher or release date attached.
More recently, some players have noticed limited-time wallet credit offers appearing while purchasing certain games. In a Reddit post, one user reported seeing an “Includes wallet credit” message while attempting to buy The Blood of Dawnwalker on the PlayStation Store. Other users in the same thread suggested this could be part of a new rewards initiative for digital purchases, noting that similar messages have appeared for other titles, including Star Wars: Zero Company, MGS Collection 2, Resonance: A Plague Tale, and Hot Wheels: Infinite Rush. It remains unclear which regions have received this feature so far.
In related PlayStation news, the company recently announced a collaboration with K-pop artist Lisa from Blackpink, which includes a limited-edition DualSense controller along with merchandise such as hats, sweatshirts, T-shirts, and tote bags. The merchandise is priced at $84.99 (approximately ₹8,000) and is set for release on October 30, 2026, though pre-orders are currently unavailable in India, with no confirmation yet on availability there after launch.
