According to reports, the Saudi-led coalition confirmed that its air defence systems successfully intercepted a Houthi missile that was fired toward Riyadh. Despite the interception, the incident triggered significant disturbances near the city, with videos circulating on social media showing smoke and fire visible at or near Riyadh’s international airport.
Flight tracking service Flightradar24 reported ‘major problems’ at Riyadh airport in the aftermath of the attack, with numerous flights being cancelled or delayed. Passengers at the airport were left stranded and confused as operations were thrown into disarray. Airlines scrambled to manage the situation as authorities worked to restore normalcy.
The Houthi movement, based in Yemen and backed by Iran, has in the past launched long-range missiles and drone strikes targeting Saudi Arabia. These attacks are widely seen as retaliatory strikes in response to the ongoing Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen, a conflict that has been raging for nearly a decade.
For Indians with family members, travel plans, or business connections in Saudi Arabia, the news has caused considerable concern. There is a large Indian diaspora residing in the Kingdom, and any instability in the region is closely watched back home. The Indian government and its embassy in Riyadh have not yet issued a formal advisory, but citizens are being urged to stay alert and monitor official channels.
