About the Movie

Samrat Prithviraj’s box office collection is seeing a downward trend from the very first day itself. Despite being declared tax-free in three BPJ states, adornment from Amit Shah, and an overdose of hyper-nationalism the movie is a flop. Samrat Prithviraj is directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi. He has immense knowledge about telling historic sagas as he had directed the very famous serial Chanakya (1991-1992). This show was loved by audiences and critics both. His association with the movie had created some buzz and excitement around its release. However, a 50-year-old Akshay Kumar playing a 26-year-old Prithvi did not appeal to anyone. The movie is said to be made after 18 years of research yet has distorted and wrong historical facts.

Samrat Prithviraj was made on a budget of 200 crores and it had a star-studded cast as well, with Sanjay Dutt and Sonu Sood in the supporting role. Manushi Chillar making her debut as Prithviraj’s love interest was not well received either.

Box Office collection

Samrat Prithviraj’s box office collection on an opening day was 10.70 crores. On Tuesday the film earned only 4.3 crores. The film has managed to only make 52 crores in total whereas Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 has already crossed 200 crores worldwide. There have been reports saying that many cinema halls had to cancel the show due to zero occupancy.

Ironically Akshay Kumar had starred in the first Bhool Bhulaiyaa. That movie becomes a massive success and is still loved by audiences. Failure of the nationalism formula.

The movie’s failure and the audience’s rejection of this hyper-nationalism say a lot about the future of such movies. With the rise of OTT, quality content became accessible to people on their mobile phones and TV. Only movies that offer a very cinematic experience can lure audiences to theatres.

The hyper-masculine movies initially pulled audiences to the theatre like Kesari, Shershah, and Sooryavanshi but this genre is slowly reaching a saturation among Indian audiences. It is fun and light movies like Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 that attract audiences to the theatre.

Akshay Kumar is one of the most reliable and profitable mainstream actors of Bollywood as his movies are for mass entertainment and do not have much to do with art or ingenuity. In recent years he has been on a money-making spree. He has been consistently making movies after movies but none of them have left a mark on cinema or its audiences.

Will the failure of Samrat Prithviraj be the turning point? Will it finally put an end to loud, preachy monologues about Dharam, parampara, etc? The Indian audiences can only hope that it does. Samrat Prithviraj will continue to play in theaters till Jug Jug Jeeyo releases. That might be a turning point for the movie or at least give it enough time to recover the production costs.
