Supreme Court Reaffirms Open Live Streaming of Proceedings, Rules Out Any Restrictions

The Supreme Court of India has once again made its stance crystal clear — live streaming of court proceedings is here to stay, and there will be no question of limiting or restricting public access to it. The apex court reiterated on October 9, 2026, that the live broadcast of its hearings is not intended for commercial purposes and should remain a transparent, public-interest initiative.

The clarification came amid ongoing discussions about how live-streamed court sessions are being used and perceived. The Supreme Court firmly stated that the practice of broadcasting proceedings was introduced as a step toward judicial transparency and citizen accessibility, not as a revenue-generating tool or an entertainment platform.

Justices presiding over the matter emphasized that the spirit behind live streaming was to open the doors of justice to every Indian, regardless of their physical location. By allowing citizens across the country to watch proceedings in real time, the court aims to demystify the judicial process and promote greater public trust in the legal system.

The court also addressed any speculation about imposing curbs on the streaming service, categorically dismissing such possibilities. Officials confirmed that no restrictive measures are being considered and that the live-streaming framework will continue in its current open format.

Since the Supreme Court first launched live streaming of its Constitution Bench hearings, the initiative has been widely praised by legal experts, journalists, and civil society groups as a landmark move toward judicial accountability. It has allowed law students, researchers, journalists, and ordinary citizens to follow landmark cases as they unfold.

The development has sparked renewed interest across India, with many calling for similar transparency measures to be extended to High Courts and lower courts across the country. Legal observers say the Supreme Court’s firm commitment to unrestricted live streaming sets a powerful precedent for the future of open justice in India.
