BOLD Brave, bold, fearless, progressive, entertaining… The non-stereotypical plot + unadulterated discussion on tabooed topics are sure to spark off conversations… BhumiPednekar puts up a solid act… Not a flawless film, but dares to speak its mind.

‘Thank You For Coming’ — we get where you’re going with this, haha — appears to be a direct response to that line Why Should Boys Have All The Fun. Why shouldn’t girls? Why indeed. This Ekta Kapoor-Rhea Kapoor outing is a spry, smart, heartfelt slap in the face of the zillions of movies that privilege boys and their putrid toys. It focusses on its girls, and lets them be silly and giddy and themselves, and it works, almost all the way.

That is where the rub lies Thank You for Coming is so screechy and loud that the actors have to not only outtalk each other but also, at times, shout each other down. If there is a takeaway from this film, it is this: talk is cheap, insight is not. There is plenty of the former in Thank You for Coming, little of the latter.

In short, Thank You For Coming is a good attempt but it doesn’t pan out well. When you have two women backing a film and two female writers putting a script together, you would anticipate a more well-thought-out and less shallow portrayal of women. Yes, we do talk about men and pleasure. But there’s more to our lives. Men are just a small part of it. Sure, films don’t bear the responsibility of being the flag-bearer of morality. Women most definitely are flawed too. But hey, we aren’t frivolous. Thank You For Coming doesn’t quite hit the spot and take that from a single millennial woman.

The movie is relatable, it’s funny, and it does have its moments that leave you teary. But most of all, it’s a love letter to everyone single and in their 30s, and well, who knows how it strikes all the right chords for many? Go watch the film, and you’ll probably have a fun time!

Karan Boolani has managed to bring forward stories and narratives around women that are often common, but not right, and other times, not talked about enough. From friendships to love to teenage drama to pleasure, there’s everything here and beyond. With a story that might seem cliche and yet impactful and emotional, team Thank You For Coming has proven to live up to its title, for all the right reasons.
