Luxury isn’t always defined by contemporary architecture or sleek modern interiors. Sometimes, it is found in the comfort of an old family home, the familiarity of its spaces, and the simple joy of slowing down. This is the sentiment digital creator Geetika Chakravarti captures in her Instagram video titled ‘slow living in my 1949 home in Lucknow,’ where she takes viewers inside her family’s ancestral residence, revealing its vintage charm, nostalgic corners, and everyday unhurried moments.
The house was built in 1949 and was carefully restored by Geetika’s parents nearly 11 years ago. With sprawling lawns, shaded verandahs, antique touches, and interiors inspired by nature, the heritage property reflects a lifestyle centered on comfort, cherished family memories, and a strong appreciation for the past.
A Deep-Rooted Connection to Lucknow
While Mumbai is currently home for Geetika, Lucknow remains deeply significant to her. She lived in the heritage house full-time for nearly six years, though her attachment to it dates back to her childhood. Regular family trips to Lucknow and visits to her maternal grandmother’s home in Allahabad helped strengthen her emotional bond with the region over the years.
Reflecting on her connection to the house, Geetika shared, “Even before moving here, we would visit this house and my nani’s home in Allahabad almost every year when we came to India. I have a lot of fond memories attached to this house, and I feel a sense of warmth and comfort every time I visit. It’s also where my love for heritage feels strongest.”
Inside the Home: Vintage Details and Everyday Rituals
The Instagram video takes viewers through the home via small, authentic rituals that make the space feel genuinely lived-in rather than curated for show. One standout feature is a hand-painted botanical mural behind the bed, featuring leafy patterns and tropical palm motifs that bring a natural element into the bedroom.
- The verandah features traditional jali-style cutouts and woven bamboo blinds, known as chiks, overlooking the gardens — a favourite spot for meals, relaxation, and time with her dog.
- The lawns are shown in a playful moment where Geetika uses a traditional hand mower, humorously captioning it as her workout.
- Interiors include dark wooden staircases, gallery walls with botanical prints, brass antiques, and terrazzo flooring, all reflecting the character of mid-century Indian homes.
Rather than opting for a fully modern aesthetic, the home retains its vintage architectural details as central to its identity. The blend of natural materials, garden views, and traditional design elements gives the property a strong sense of continuity with its past, while demonstrating how older homes can preserve their unique character even as they continue to serve the needs of contemporary living.
