Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (April 23, 2026) expressed strong confidence in her party’s performance as voting progressed in the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Addressing a rally in the Bow Bazar area of Kolkata, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo said early polling trends suggest that her party is already in a winning position. According to her, the mood of the जनता (people) clearly indicates support for the TMC.
She also made a broader political statement, saying her ultimate goal goes beyond the state. Banerjee said she aims to unite opposition parties at the national level and challenge the BJP government in Delhi after securing victory in the state elections.
Polling in the first phase covered 152 out of 294 assembly constituencies, with a voter turnout of 89.93% recorded till 5 p.m. The second phase of voting is scheduled for April 29, while counting of votes will take place on May 4.
“I am not interested in any post or chair. My only aim is to bring an end to the BJP government in Delhi,” Banerjee told the gathering.
