Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday strongly criticized the alleged molestation of a minor girl student in Bihar’s Jamui district, calling on both central and state governments to implement concrete measures to protect women amid what she described as an alarming rise in crimes against them.
Addressing reporters in Wayanad, Kerala, the Congress MP expressed deep concern over the escalating violence faced by women across the country. “It’s horrible, and crimes against women are increasing. Crimes against women are just increasing. It’s become unsafe for women. It was always unsafe; it has just become more and more increasingly violent towards women,” she stated.
Priyanka Gandhi further argued that government schemes and initiatives hold little value if basic safety cannot be guaranteed to women in public spaces. “I think there’s no point talking about big schemes and programmes if we can’t even ensure the safety of women on our streets. So it’s really something that all of us need to think about. Wherever there are state governments, and especially the central government, they need to think about how they are going to ensure that women feel safe,” she said, calling for collective reflection on the issue.
Details of the Jamui Case
The Congress leader’s statement comes in the wake of a disturbing incident in Bihar’s Jamui district that has sparked widespread outrage. According to the FIR, the incident took place on Saturday evening in the Madwa Pahar area, where a minor girl student was allegedly stopped and molested by a group of youths as she was returning home. A male companion accompanying her was also reportedly assaulted during the incident.
The case gained public attention after a video of the alleged assault began circulating on social media on Sunday evening, prompting the district administration to reach out to the victim’s family and formally register a case.
In connection with the incident, Jamui police arrested Nandan Yadav, identified as the main accused, following a police encounter in which he sustained a gunshot injury to his leg. He has since been hospitalized for treatment. Investigators reportedly identified Yadav through the circulated video, in which he was seen wearing a red gamchha. Police also arrested Ramashish Chaudhary for allegedly sharing the video online. So far, five individuals, including three juveniles, have been taken into custody in relation to the case.
Additionally, authorities have registered FIRs against operators of 120 social media profiles across multiple platforms for allegedly circulating the video or sharing details that could reveal the identity of the minor victim, according to police officials.
