Bihar Police on Tuesday arrested Nandan Yadav, the masked man seen in a viral video grabbing a 16-year-old schoolgirl in Jamui, after he was shot in the leg during a police operation. His associate, Hari Ram Yadav, was also arrested in the same raid.
According to police officials, the encounter occurred when the duo attempted to flee from the scene and attacked the police team. Officials did not immediately disclose further details surrounding the circumstances of the arrest. Munger range deputy inspector general (DIG) Rakesh Kumar said the special investigation team (SIT) apprehended the two men near the Kundan Braj area on the Jamui-Lakhisarai road, roughly 5 kilometres from the site of the assault. Police stated that their team fired at the suspect after he attacked them and tried to escape.
The case stems from an incident on the evening of September 19, when Nandan Yadav, who had covered his face with a gamcha, was part of a group that stopped two Class 10 students returning from a local tourist spot. The group allegedly made vulgar comments, slapped the boy, and sexually assaulted the girl while both students pleaded for help. Police said Nandan Yadav was identified in one of the video clips as the person who grabbed and dragged the girl while she screamed.
The incident sparked widespread outrage across the country, prompting the state police to form an SIT led by sub-divisional police officer Deepti Monali to identify and apprehend those involved. Jamui superintendent of police (SP) Vishwajeet Dayal had earlier said that seven individuals were identified through social media video clips, and three of them, later confirmed to be minors, were arrested on Monday.
Separately, police said the SIT arrested three more individuals — Ramashish Chaudhary, Kundan Kumar and Mohammad Faiyaaj — for allegedly circulating the video clips online. A police officer noted that a technical team had traced the origin of the videos that surfaced on social media, and further efforts are underway to identify who recorded the footage and who shared it, possibly through WhatsApp groups.
