Two minors in Bihar’s Jamui district were allegedly harassed by a group of men on September 19 while returning home after attending a coaching class. The teenagers had reportedly gone for a photo session before setting off on a scooter, after which a group of men allegedly stopped them at an isolated location and subjected them to abuse and humiliation. A video of the incident subsequently went viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage and calls for strict action against those responsible.
According to reports, the viral footage shows one of the accused allegedly grabbing the girl and dragging her as she pleaded with the group to let them go. Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Dayal stated that the victims had not initially come forward to file a complaint. It was only after the video began circulating online that police were able to trace the minors and record their statements. Following intervention by the district administration, an FIR was registered at Sadar police station under the POCSO Act along with relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police have so far arrested three individuals in connection with the case, and the investigation remains ongoing. District Magistrate Naveen also reached out to the victims and recorded their statements. Authorities said they are currently reviewing the available evidence before deciding on further legal steps. In addition to the investigation, police have announced plans to launch an awareness campaign aimed at preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The case has drawn attention beyond local law enforcement, with the Bihar State Women’s Commission taking cognisance of the matter and demanding strict action against the accused. The incident also sparked political reactions, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi calling it deeply disturbing and raising questions over the conduct of those involved. JDU spokesperson Naval Sharma responded by asserting that the rule of law would prevail in Bihar and that mob justice would not be tolerated.
The incident has renewed focus on the safety of minors and the importance of swift action in cases of harassment. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances of the case and the involvement of all those allegedly responsible. The arrested individuals are expected to face legal proceedings under the charges listed in the FIR, with further updates anticipated as the investigation progresses.
